I'm looking at buying this book, but want to get the most up-to-date version. Does anyone know what that version is? I've seen a few on E-bay at a reasonable price.

There are several versions available, but I believe "Scotty" Thompson passed away several years ago -- any of the editions are well worth the price of admission.

This book is available in a lot of places. I would look at Barnes and Noble on line or Amazon, someplace like that. I've seen it sell on Ebay for considerably more than my local scottish shop sells it, for that matter you can check with the Portland shop www.scottishcountryshop.com . I'm sure some of the other guys may have sources for you also, this book seems to be resident on all of our bookshelves.

A great book of introduction to kilt wearing. Thompson provides guidelines not rules that should be followed. I am glad that I have a copy.

I had heard that too, and I must agree that his would be of greatest knowledge IMHO.

I only wish that someone else would write a kind of follow up book, sharing their knowledge of proper tradtional wear, contemporay wear, and casual wear based on all the styles and ranges that have been introduced in recent years.

Now where could we find someone that wears kilts all the time, has the gift of knowledge, a very diverse kilt collection consisting of traditional, American, casual, and some off the wall styles, and a large photo album to boot..........Are you getting the hint yet Hamish.
I believe a lot of new kiltwears could and do learn alot from you. Maybe it is time to share your knowledge in a bit of a tutorial and continue that gift that Thompson started.

I was thinking of ordering the book off of Amazon some time ago, but they only have copies going for $150!! They must be smoking crack if they think I'd pay that for a book.

It's out of print now, so people think they can make a mint off of you. You can find copies on ebay and in Celtic stores for ~ $20.

I paid $11 Canadian at a local shop near Bear's new store. That should give you an idea of what it is worth. We have two local shops that carry it from time to time.

Thanks guys. I decided to just go ahead and order from E-bay. It's advertised as the 3rd edition, and it's new, so hopefully it's the most recent. Amazon and Barnes & Noble didn't carry it new, but both had them used. Lowest price on Amazon was $149.00!!

That gives me a really good idea. The guy in Salt Lake wanted $30 for it, which seemed fishy to me, but then again he said a traditional kilt was $1000USD!
