First foray in a kilt...
...albeit in partly-rented kit.
I attended the local RCAF mess dinner on Friday attending, as I have for the past 19 years, as the guest of my very good friend, a former Colonel in the RCAF.
I brought my new-to-me ex-military Cameron of Erracht kilt, a family legacy Sgian Dubh, and the tuxedo bits I owned - shirt, tie and shoes to the collection, as well as hose (off-white - I know) and flashes I purchased, topped off with a rental PC and sporran.
I played around a bit with hose height and placement of the flashes and I'm not sure I've nailed that yet but as I am intending to wear the kilt in a number of other situations I will have an opportunity to both practice and experiment with other configurations, including other hose colours.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the experience but I enjoyed my evening in the kilt immensely, and had great conversations with others who attended the event in kilts. This included a chat with a fellow who is selling some of his items off as he no longer has occasion to wear his kilt. It is a great conversation starter.
I'd like to express my thanks to the contributors to this forum who have got me this far, so far.

Very well dressed, sack the socks (sorry couldn't help myself), and it'll be perfect. Thanks for posting the picture, it's always a little scarey, but you have nothing to worry about you have done yourself proud.

I know I am in the minority here but IO think the white hose are perfect for the formal attire that you are wearing.

I have to agree with Phil (sailortats) with the white hose in this situation. As far as the flashes, I believe the color is correct for the event (or royal blue as an alternative) and the length is fine. I wear my flashes a bit shorter in some cases (casual business). Good job in my opinion.

A great looking first foray. As you keep going and experimenting, you will find many combinations that you enjoy.

Very smart indeed. I think the hose are fine for a black tie occasion and would wear myself.

The height of your hose look good to me, I personally prefer hand-tied garters and just a bit further forward on the leg. Everything else looks good to me. Glad you enjoyed your mess dinner.

You look great! (Except those off-white hose ![Razz](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif) )- just kidding, I wore white/off-white hose for about the first 20 times I wore formal attire. The main reason I don't now is just in case anyone from X-Marks the Scot happens to be at the same event! ![Shocked](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif)
I wear my hose just slightly (1" or less) below the knee, but then I'm 5'7" so I just about have to! I think they look good though. I wear my flashes or garters slightly forward, with the rear most "tab" in the center of the side of my leg, and the other just in front of that.
You're looking good; keep it up!
