Dinner color choice advice
I have a dinner coming up where I will be one of many guests of honor. It is an evening event and the Saxon dress code is dark suit and tie and kilts are encouraged. I will be wearing a BBSBA, matching 5-button waistcoat and white shirt with my kilt. The tie I want to wear is black with gold emblems. With that base in mind, I have a few questions:
- I will buy new hose for this event. I was thinking dark green or dark blue. Thoughts?
- If I were to try and match my tie, I would go with black or gold flashes. My wife can make either of those. I already have green and red. Black? Gold? Another color?
- I only own white pocket squares. Do I go with white, none, or buy a black or gold one to match tie/flashes/?
I know I'm being matchy-matchy here but this is the first "official" event that I will have worn Highland dress to and I want to make a good impression. Thanks.

What does BBSBA stand for? My top hit was Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area.
At a time like this one must ask themselves, 'WWJDD"
What Would Jimmy Durante Do?

Mustard hose might look nice. Of the two colors you mentioned I’d probably pick green.

I'm not opposed to mustard. I picked those colors because they're available from USAKilts et. al. for lower than HoC prices. But you really can't go wrong with HoC.

I'd be inclined to go with green hose and red flashes, as a very traditional Scottish look. To my mind, navy hose might not work as well with black jacket.
Unless mustard colored hose pick up a color in your kilt (which I don't see if I look up an image of the Armstrong tartan), the connection between hose and bow tie is not that strong.
Enjoy the event, though! You'll look very sharp whatever direction you choose.

I agree with revdpatience that dark blue hose don't work very well with a black jacket and waistcoat. I'd be tempted to wear green or a more medium blue, nothing too dark. The jacket and waistcoat are doing the job of the "suit", and the hose don't need to be dark.
As far as being traditional, you can never go wrong with red flashes/garter ties, regardless of what else you're wearing.
On pocket squares, it's really just a personal touch. I like red pocket squares that add the same bit of colour as garter ties, but it's equally nice to match any colour in your kilt or your tie. And even white is perfectly fine, albeit a tad unimaginative. Were it me, I'd go with either red or gold for the pocket square.
What kind of sporran will you be wearing with this?

Since it's an evening event, I have an unimaginative silver-cantled black fur sporran. Cantle is a simple knotwork design with no thistles or anything else. Fur is fake black rabbit, short pile. No tassels.

If it were me I would go with a dark tweed, of course a black argyll would fit the bill if thats what you have. As for hose colour, I would like to suggest claret, for the tie I would not worry about matching with anything, if you have a club, military or school tie that you are entitled to wear then that is what I would wear. One interesting idea would be to order an Army Benevolent Fund tie, link below, of all my ties the ABF is worn more often with my kilt than any other.

I have one tweed that looks like it got shredded in a badger attack and the other's suit-length. :/

Also a good choice but not often found amongst the low priced but not garbage-quality sites.

The tie has pretty much been decided for me as the tie matches the event that I'm going to - it was matching everything else to the tie that I was concerned about.
