Question for any with a usakilt
G'day all, just checked out the usakilt site for first time. My question to anyone who has either a casual or philabeg is do they have the reverse and double width pleat etc at each end of the pleated section?
I know that my amerikilt does not have these or darts for that matter and feel that a it effects the hang of the kilt. If I end up ordering a second kilt I would make sure the next one had all these in it. I have collected some great instructions on making my own but have yet to start on that venture, it has been a while since I last used a sewing machine (anout 17 yrs).
Also what material are the philabegs made of?
hope this all makes sense. Cheers to all Andrew

Andrew,
I don't know about double/reverse pleating issues. Sorry, my USA Kilt didn't come with technical discriptions.
I do know that the fabric that's available depends on the tartan. It kind of depends on what Rocky can get the tartan in. If you send an email to him asking about specific tartans, he'll let you know what material they are. It's one of the parts of the new website that's getting fixed.
Hope that helps,
Rufus

thanks rufus, what I mean with the pleats is that if you look at your kilt the first pleat should be double the depth (2 setts if tartan) of the normal pleat depth and the last pleat before underapron should be reversed making a box pleat before the apron. I have been advised that when i make my own to make sure that I do this as it helps the kilt to sit right. they are missing from my AK an the last pleat on the right kicks out if I am not wearing the kilt exactly right. Have the said pleats elliminates the problem. So basically what I want to make sure of is that if I end up buying anoher kilt I want it to have those pleats in place.
Cheers mate Andrew

I have a USAKilt. It was a custom order, so it's not fair to answer the question; I got exactly what I asked for.
However, that's very good news for you: You want double-reverse pleating on the hips, ask. I went so far as to sketch out what I wanted, and Rocky built it.
So the answer to the question, "Does USAKilt do this?" is, "If you say they do."

I'm not sure about the pleats, but, I have a philibeag and there are several materials that they come in. Just depends on the tartan you want. Rocky is a great guy and will do his very best to get you the exact kilt you want!
I've survived DAMN near everything

I know what you are talking about Andrew, My AK curls toooo much and the reverse pleat you are talking about would be a big improvement. Sometimes I have to take it off and re-iron it to get it to hang better, but it still does not hang as I would like it too. You might also want to talk to Michael Butler to see if he would do that for you if you buy another.
Another improvement on the AK would be to get the pleats ironed down where they belong with the help of your wife pinning it first then sew down the inside of the pleat. The AK does not hold them too well without that it seems. I am working on doing that with mine.
Keep watching here Andrew. some kilt maker is bound to know what you are saying and jump in..

Varies with the tartan. Just ask for the specifics until the site is updated.

Thanks guys. JohnAllen, I too have decided that the best thing to do with my ak is to sew the inside of the pleats, but have not yet started on it. I have spent time spreading it out on the floor and repressing the pleats so its all straight etc I now plan on pinig the pleats and sewing them. have been busy at work so not had a real weekend in a while o had to put it on hold.
Cheers Andrew

Andrew I don't want to Hi-Jack this thread any further so I started a new one on Amerikilts. I called it "Amerikilt Improvements" under
"Contemporary & Non-Traditional Kilts"
