halloween kilt pattern
With all due respect to Bear, has anyone ever tried to make a kilt using one of those fabric store halloween patterns? I figure that it does a pretty poor job of pleating, but if it was in the right neighborhood, then I would atleast on the right path.

These will get you on the right path, and you can ask as many questions as you like, and somebody will have the right answer, most likely.
Also, try to get some close-up looks at some real kilts if you can. You'll notice a lot of little things that will help you 'get' what the patterns are trying to tell you.
Good luck.

The folkwear instructions are the clearest and easiest to follow I've seen. I also have the Simplicity pattern with the Argyll jacket and printed out instructions from 2 websites. Especially for a beginner I recommend the Folkwear pattern set. The Simpliciy pattern is the only one I found that has a pattern for an Argyll jacket though. If anyone wants to make an Argyll wait til the local sewing shops have a big sale with Simplicity patterns included. I got it for $1.99, regular price is $16.95 but for the kilt the Folkwear pattern is much better.

I'm no expert, but in looking at a lot of tartans over the past year, I don't recall seeing a real Scottish tartan that contains the Halloween colors (black and orange) Does anyone know if there is one, and if so, which clan is it?

Halloween Colours...
I'm no expert, but in looking at a lot of tartans over the past year, I don't recall seeing a real Scottish tartan that contains the Halloween colors (black and orange) Does anyone know if there is one, and if so, which clan is it?
Why, my own is a "Halloween colours" kilt -- Cumming Hunting in "Ancient" Colours, also known as the Buchan District Tartan -- it has "ancient red" (which is actually Orange) and black in it. See my gallery for a couple of pictures!
Cheers,

Bubba,
Small world. Mty wife picked up the same jacket pattern on Friday and we picked out the material on Saturday, with enough for the kilt too.
