Making Kilt Flashes...anyone know how?

Looking for a turorial of sorts on how to make your own kilt flashes. Does anyone know how to do it, or have a link to information? Thanks!

I actually made a nice pair last night. The only materials needed were long sewing velcro (male and female), some grosgrain (I chose red this time), and some adhesive velcro. I'll try and post a picture later this week.

The grosgrain or the velcro? I used roughly 1.5 inches for the grosgrain ( with two strands coming down so that it looks like this

I also used a bbq lighter to burn the cut ends so that they would not fray. I quick pass over was enough, otherwise it will melt the material and change the shape of the cut.

velcro I used standard with that I found at a craft shop. I did it slightly different then how Blu described. I sewed the velco strips together so that I could tighten or loosen the gater on my leg. As long as it holds your socks up I say!

Please help with the velcro size Colin as there is no such thing as a "Standard" width where I am. you can get it from 1/2 " to 4 Inches and everything in between.

Curious though how you adjust the velcro if it's sewn together??

I sewed one male end to one female end. I have flipped on the male end, so that when you wrap the velcro around you calf it will attach. We used to have something similar to hold up our shin guards and socks in hockey.

I have added little strips of velcro to the grosgrain so that I just attach it to the female end of the strip, wrap the male end around, and I now have interchangeable flashes. I now have a red set, a MacKenzie set (thanks Bear!), and a green set. All this for under $20 cdn, and I have enough for a few more. I will take pictures tonight and upload them tomorrow am so that you can see what I mean.

I bought my sewing velcro from a craft store and it was the one width they carried. If you go to a fabric store than, yes you are right, the velcro will range from 1/4 inch to 5 inches. I would say that the velcro I used is about an inch. I would not go any bigger that 1.5 to 2 inches as show more under the hose. I would also not go under 1 inch in width.
