Greetings!
Hello all!
I am a new forum member, and am introducing myself. I stumbled upon this forum while researching Highland dress, and am excited to be a part of it.
I am a long time kilt wearer, and am in the market for a new one. My first kilt is in the Macdonald of Glencoe/MacIan tartan, Modern. My family hails back to that branch of the Macdonalds, and the progenitor of our family in America survived the Massacre, grew to adulthood in, and emigrated to the Americas in the 1730s.
While I am aware of the dubious claims that the Macdonald of Glencoe tartan is "authentic", and bases its claims of authenticity on the Sobieski Stuarts, I rather like the tartan, and also rather enjoy all of the notoriety that surrounds the Vestiarium Scoticum. I am leaning toward Macdonald of the Isles Hunting Weathered for my next kilt. It will be a "casual" kilt, that I plan to wear in the place of plain old khaki pants or shorts. Interestingly, this is another sett "set" forth in the VS! While I agree that anyone can and should be able to wear whatever tartan one wishes, I personally want to be able to make some claim or rationale for what I wear, beyond "It look good."
I look forward to learning and sharing here!
Tom
