Vegan kilts

I don't mean this to be flippant at all, I'm just honestly sort of thinking outloud, but isn't this already a thing just not under the name? If you grabbed a less pricey Polyester Viscose kilt with PU leather, you'd have a vegan kilt? Seems like a way to stamp "Vegan," on an entry level kilt so that you can raise the price.

Mr Wood claims these new vegan kilts are more durable than the traditional kilt which he says "tends to start to rot after several years".

Where does one even begin with this statement?

Maybe in some parts of Scotland, lol. We were staying in Dunoon and there was a t-shirt I wanted to wear the next day but needed to wash. I hand-washed it and hung it to dry overnight. The next day I pulled it down... it was no less damp than when I'd hung it up! (And this was quite lightweight jersey, not even a heavy t-shirt...) I can only imagine if my kilt had gotten damp...

Years ago Utilikilts offered a kilt they touted as vegan. All cotton. The White Natural Vegan Workman's Utilikilt.

Being carnivorous, I wore it with a leather belt - defeating the manufacturer's intent.

Well, I guess I'd begin with my father's kilt - pure wool worsted of course, Menzies modern green tartan, purchased from Forsyths in Glasgow in the late 1940's (he can't remember the exact year) and in most respects as good as new and perfectly wearable by anyone that it fits (not me, sadly, nor my son) - my nephew has worn it recently and its appearance is superior to any modern hire-kilt I've seen. It differs from most more modern kilts only in that the leather straps are light brown in colour. It's hard to imagine a 'vegan' kilt ..................... well, you know.

Recently due to health reasons I have gone vegan, my migraines have decreased as a result. I find it interesting that people think it better to use poly-viscose than wool. The shearing of sheep must be done to keep them healthy, and shearing does not hurt the animal. I suppose you may have a problem with the leather straps but there are other alternatives to leather straps if that is the issue.

I have several older wool kilts circa 1940-1950 that have not rotted out so no worries there either. All in all this looks like a case of someone wanting to rebrand a PV kilt simply to make more money.

One problems as I see it with converting to a completely vegan lifestyle is the replacement of leather.

Often leather is replaced with plastics that are a product of the petrochemical industry. These are obviously environmentally quite detrimental.

Obviously we have been using leather since the dawn of humanity. Wool came a bit later but sill has been used for thousands of years.

I don't see the point of replacing them with things that are environmentally less friendly. We should be trying to eradicate as much plastic as possible from our lives.

Also you don't kill a sheep to harvest the wool? Could there not be ethically vegan sheep farm.Where the animals are not slaughtered for meat?
