    brogue shoes

I have a question regarding Scottish brogue shoes [dress type]. While recently visiting one of my favorite websites "The Scottish Regimental Shop" in Edinburgh there was a pair of brogue shoes on sale https://scottishregimentalstore.co.u...oes-6906-p.asp which after shipping charges it came to about $135.00 U.S. dollars the price of a pair of decent dress shoes here in the U.S. before taxes added.
My question to the rabble especially to those who served in Her Majesty military is this. I noticed that each side of the tongue in the shoe is stitched to the shoe to coordinate with the foot [i.e.. left foot, left stitch]. Is this normal? Is it done so in the event of dressing in a hurried manner the shoe tongue will not fold over into the shoe or is this just some the shoe manufacturer Jamie Alexander does on his own.

I can’t speak to the regimental shoes but I have a pair of older US made Johnston and Murphy brogued oxfords with tongues like you describe.

Hmm, interesting question. I'll have a look at my Sanders brogues this evening and see if they're constructed that way. I don't recall the tongue being stitched as you described, but I'll make sure.

    Same here.

I just checked my Sanders uniform brogues, and the tongues are only stitched in at the base (past the ends of the lace holes). No stitching on the sides of the tongues.

As far as brogues are concerned, my current shoes are Sanders Braemars and Loake Buckinghams - both with stitching only on the base. Of my other shoes only my Cheaney Overstones have the tongues stitched as you describe. However, in the Royal Navy the Sanders Oxfords issued to officers had the tongues stitched up one side - which side I am afraid I am unable to remember. As far as I can tell Sanders no longer make that particular Oxford without a toe-cap - perhaps naval officers wear a different shoe these days. I suspect the side stitching on the tongue is merely a choice of the maker/designer as Sanders shoes were not obligatory - they were issued initially and were incredibly cheap to renew from stores - but a similar Oxford shoe from another maker, perhaps of better quality and perhaps without side stitching on the tongue, would have been acceptable and would certainly have gone unnoticed.
