    Passing it on

One of my sons passed through yesterday on the way back from from some training. I asked him if he wanted one of my kilts (I am trying to get rid of stuff, more to come). He has worn them in the past. He ended up taking an old Canadian Black Watch kilt, because after all it is no different from the Campbell sett. It will fit him better than it does me. He does have a tendency to wear them in a more modern way. I need to teach him better...

That was a super thing to do. I always get a boost when I spy some of my recycled kilt attire being worn by others. Sometimes I see an item from the past in the locality that has been passed on again and I think again. I like that.

Will they let him wear his kilt while he's running through the woods of Petawawa?
Those ancient U Nialls from Donegal were a randy bunch.

Probably not, as he's US Coast Guard stationed in Buffalo. Over here it's just a kilt in Black Watch tartan. Although he does work with the RCMP, and is involved with the Shiprider program (Canadians put some on our boats, we put some on their boats. Works for those cross border stops).

Bravo Zulu to your son for his service! I've been a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for several years and while being inland I haven't had much interaction with active duty Coast Guard I've been incredibly impressed by the men and women I have had the privilege of meeting or working with.

The Coast Guard tartan is rather nice, in my opinion. As an Auxiliarist I probably have the option of wearing it, although I'd want some kind of Auxiliary badge as a kilt pin to make it obvious that I'm a civilian and not a member or veteran of our active and reserve Coast Guard. The right to wear anything related to the Coast Guard is a great privilege for Auxiliarists and I'm careful not to do anything that might misrepresent me as something that I'm not.

Roger that. I'm in the Aux as well. Both my sons started there. BM2 is the one in Buffalo. The other went through the Academy and is LT.

It's always good to meet a shipmate, and even better when the new shipmate is a clansman as well! I'm Campbell of Cawdor and a proud member of the Clan Campbell Society of North America. In the upcoming highland wedding where I'm the best man the bride insisted on Black Watch rather than specific clan tartans for the groomsmen so we could match and coordinate with her bridesmaids. While I'm quite partial to my Cawdor Ancient kilt, I bought a Black Watch and somewhat shrugged to my friend the groom as I'm basically still in Campbell.
