19th Scottish newspaper publisher: what tartan was his kilt?

I’ve recently been reading about John Murdoch ( aka: Murchadh na Feilidh, or Murdo the Kilt) , 1818 - 1903. He was well known for wearing Scottish Highland garb. I could only find one, fairly poor quality black and white photo, and no mention of what, if any, tartan his kilt was made of.
Does anyone know, from another photograph or written sources, what tartan ( if any) his kilt was made of?

The photograph is insufficiently clear to be able to determine whether the kilt is tartan, and if so what, or plain. The plaid on the other hand is easy, it's Royal Stewart.

Interesting that his doublet conforms to the instructions given in the 1898 Cutter's Practical Guide, being of velvet with cord trim around the borders.
