    Ren Faire Kilted Wench

Sooo, I'm going to my first ever Renaissance Faire in about 8 weeks. I thought I'd get a jump on my outfit now.
Since many of you are old faire pros, I'm asking for some pics of the lasses, especially if you have any kilted lasses (somewhat modest pics, I'm a mom.. and not 20). Ours is Pyrate themed, So I'm going for kilted pirate warrior wench (???!! ***). Hmmm, kind of like my avatar I guess, but with more arrrrrr.

I'm thinking solid black or solid spruce kilt. My shoes look like this:

Also, any links to accessories would be helpful.
    Thanks

maybe similar to this but replace skirt with kilt and knee boots with something lower with hose...but you would want an eye patch to finish the look ;)

    Re: Ren Faire Kilted Wench

You will discover about 90 booths at Faire that sell womens garb. It's not dirt cheap, but all things considered, it's pretty affordable.

A lot depends on the level of society you are aiming for. If you want to wear a noblewomans gown, then brace yourself for a *gigantic* amount of sewing work. On the other hand, considering how freaking much work it is to make these things, they sell for what seems to me, to be a pittance, at Faire...maybe $200-$300?

The peasant wench getup is (so I'm told) a lot more comfortable. You can put this together for $100...less if you happen to have some experience in sewing costumes. *ahem* To uber-simplify...

***chemise...aka extra long poofy shirt with relaxed neckline, often adjusted with a string.
***bodice .... see "The bodice goddess"... http://www.bodice-goddess.com/ ... this seems to be where the lasses go for "color".

Pic of simple chemise and bodice..

Some bodices essentially function as massive, lace up push-up bras. Others are more modest. A lot depends on where the neckline of the bodice is. You will learn that there's a large range of..hmmm... "tendency to advertise their assets" among the lasses at Faire; from modest to practially illegal.

***long skirt, usually cotton and usually a solid color. There's no reason that it HAS to be a solid color, just that it seems the lasses prefer it.

This lass is wearing two skirts, one basically as a petticoat.

Her hat is the typical muffin hat, which is worn by practically everybody at Faire. You also have the option of making a flower garland for your hair if you like, or wearing a snood. If you join a Guild, you might have some Guild rules about what you can wear and what you can't.

Trust me...go very very very very very slow, when it comes to joining a Guild. Take your time. Do NOT even **HINT** about any interest or commitment until you've been a dozen times and are drop-dead certain you want to do it.

None of the above is very "pirate-ey" but by adding a tricorn hat or something, you could change that. There are also the pirate girls in boots, hats, painted-on ultra-tight pants, leather corsets, long peacock feathers and LOTS and LOTS of RED.

I was gonna say, Zardoz seems to get to the BEST Ren Faire-y events and his photos are great. Certainly some inspiration to be found there.

I think Zardoz is our resident Ren Faire expert! Hopefully he'll see the thread and weigh in.

    Re: Ren Faire Kilted Wench

    GGGP,

I suspect you know this, but for any Renaissance Faire outfit you can be period accurate or you can be cool. The vast majority of Renaissance Faire outfits are far more inspired by the Dungeons and Dragons role playing game than actual attire worn during the time of Elizabeth I. (Don't even get Alan started about men's Ren Faire boots! )

Since we are talking lady Renaissance pirate wenches I think we can all agree you are going for cool!

Anyway, I offer you a photograph of my family in our Renaissance Faire outfits

    Here you have....

One brave and resourceful highland courier

    One wee little Shepherdess

    One clever Goldsmith's apprentice

and one of the mysterious Fairy folk, a Lady of the sidhe

I wish you luck on your outfit and hope you have a grand time at Faire

    Cheers

    Jamie
