    tartan waistcoat

I scored a length of asymmetric tartan today and I think there's enough to make a waistcoat. The warp does not match the weft. There are rectangles.

The piece is 57x21=1197 sq inches. It's not much, so I only have one shot.

Question: What is the secret to lining up the lines across the front? I am not going to be cutting on the bias.

Do lots of pattern layout before making your first cut. It is easier if you make a second pattern piece so you can arrange both front pattern pieces (L and R) at the same time. When you get close to pinning and cutting, make some marks on your pattern pieces to match the lines on fabric. For example, maybe a horizontal yellow line goes through the middle of the top buttonhole and a vertical red line goes through another landmark. That helps you ensure that your lines, well, line up. Don't forget about the front overlap (button side goes underneath buttonhole side) if you are trying for (and have enough fabric for) both horizontal and vertical alignment. If you are putting in pockets and welts, you'll have to make similar marks on the welt pattern so you can cut two pieces that will line up with the pocket area on each front.
