New Use for Old Kilt Hose

What do you do when you don't need your kilt hose for kilts any more?

Plus fours!

I'm afraid we've lost Jamie.

Hey Jamie, why don't you try these on for size? They're tweed, they almost look like kilts, and you can wear Argyll hose with them.

Brilliant Rex!

My lovely Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess and I finally got around to taking our old 1971 Schwinn Twinn bicycle into the shop for some much needed repairs. Afterwards we thought that it would be practical to add some baskets to it (so we could save gas and the environment a bit by doing some of our shopping by bicycle). It gave the Schwinn a bit of a vintage look and that got me to thinking about what would be the appropriate cycling attire for a highland gentlemen. I contacted Jock Scot and MacMillan of Rathdown for some advice and decided plus fours would be just the thing for a gentleman cyclist.

The plus fours are simply dress pants from the Target clearance rack ($6.50) that I hemmed and added an elastic cuff to.* They are comfortable and practical (no pants legs to become entangled in the chain).

I have been quite frustrated that I haven't been able to share this photo due to an ongoing computer issue, so my thanks to Rex and walkerk for putting them up. Here is Kent's color version

Some bicycle clubs put on "Tweed Rides" where the cyclists dress in vintage attire for leisurely journeys between cafes or pubs. I think this ensemble would be just the thing for one.

Flat Cap Confederation Rejoice! For I have permission from Jock Scot himself to wear flat caps with plus fours!

* I did do the conversion myself, sadly it wasn't up to stuff and my F-H.C.A.G. had to rip out all my stitches and do the whole thing over again. Quote the F-H.C.A.G. "Did you really want one leg shorter than the other?"

Now we're talking about MY kind of riding!!! Not quite up to the caloric output standards needed for lycra shorts and jersey... unless the lycra ensemble is done up in tartan.

Then again, what cyclist among us doesn't have the Harris Tweed jacket, the hose, and the trousers to be altered?

The only REAL problem I see with following Jamie's example with a full charge of panache is, Who has a vintage bike? With platform pedals?

I've been wanting one of these for many years. It's a vintage WWII Swiss messenger bicycle that would fit the style very well. I've also seen them with a leather message pouch that fits inside the frame between the rider's legs, although that would be simple enough to make from scratch if the bike came without it. The rack on the back of the bike would be easy enough to mount a basket or crate onto as well.

I thought a leather tool pouch would would be a nice (and practical) touch for the bicycle. I will have to look at my leather scraps and see what I can make.

I dug around a little more and found this picture of one with the leather pouch I was talking about. Man, that looks nice!

I thought a leather tool pouch would would be a nice (and practical) touch for the bicycle. I will have to look at my leather scraps and see what I can make.

I do think that would be a nice touch, especially if you could stock it with vintage tools.

NOT ONE OF THOSE TARTAN MONSTROCOTIES!Stone the crows, give a chap a bit of advice, thinking all will be well and then------AND THEN, what do you come up with? THAT DAMN HAT!!!! Give me a large brandy some one. No, two might be better! What am I going to do with a fellow who wears a tartan bonnet under ANY circumstances! Hanging is too good for them. Shooting maybe?
