Tweed Jackets for Gentlemen of Substance
At the risk of being shot down in flames I would like to share some information that I have gleaned from surfing the web.
As a GOS I have been looking for a tweed day jacket so that I can raise the level of my sartorial elegance. Being a somewhat more comfortable size than the majority I have compiled the following list of websites and prices for suppliers who make jackets in generous sizes that will fit our more generous frames. The list is not exhaustive and I welcome any additions. I have tried to keep the list below the £250 / $400 limit so that inevitably excludes bespoke tailoring although it does include made to measure as most jackets in excess of 50-54 inch chests are by necessity made to order. It also does not include a waistcoat/vest unless stated. It does not either take into account what cloth is available. Some offer the standard black, lovat blue and green, some also offer a wider choice of cloth and colours.
It is purely for information purposes and as a basis and help to your own searches.
So far I have found the following suppliers of larger sized tweed jackets. in no particular order -
Scotweb up to 60" chest - £222,32 (includes Xmarks discount)
made to measure - £259.28 (includes Xmarks discount)
Reid Kilts made to measure - £210
Kintail made to measure - £195
Tartanweb made to measure - £225
Heritage of Scotland - up to 56" - £229.56 includes waistcoat/vest
Evelyn Spence made to measure - £192.50
Tartantime - made to measure - £204 56//58 £245 60 £265
Scotkilt - made to measure - £222
I supply this info just for comparison purposes only it is by no means exhaustive, although it is the result of much searching. I personally cannot gurantee any of the suppliers nor the quality of the finished garment. As I say it is just for info and as a basis to aid you in your searches.

Re: Tweed Jackets for Gentlemen of Substance
I can add what will probably be an ignored offering at Heritage Of Scotland that I have purchased from in the past. Tweed Jacket and vest 191-196GBP, jacket alone 173GBP. I have three tweed jacket and vest sets in Lovat green, Loden green with Navy check, and Midnight Navy Harris tweed, and all fit very well and appear well made. If you keep you eyes open they have about bimonthly sales of 15-20% off which can help save a lot (that is when I bought mine). Depending on the jacket style they have a selection of about 30 different tweeds from several different manufacturers. Oh, and I am a 52 Long or XL--no extra charge for the size unless you want the XL sleeves.

Hi Grizzly
Don't know if Basingstoke is too far for you to travel but they have a Slaters Menswear branch there (I think thats the closest one to Southampton) as well as others throughout Britain.
I purchased a made to measure tweed jacket and waistcoat from the Glasgow branch recently at a cost of £240. I am 48" chest. They have several pattern books for you to chose from.
The beauty of having it made to order is that you can choose your own style of sleeve cuff, epaulette etc., or do without.
Give them a call.
Cheers
Eck

Grizzly,
Let's not forget Rocky at USAkilts! He is currently offering tweed jackets with waistcoat for $399.99 + a $30 dollar premium for those in mid 50s sizes.
Choice of cuffs, epaulets or not, 1,2, or 3 button all for that same price.
We've been sending kilt related dollars over to you guys for quite a while, here's your chance to send some of it back!!

Rocky's (I believe) are made by St Kilda and are also able to do larger sizes. My size 48 was a St Kilda and I am very happy with the product.

I saw your splendid jacket and waistcoat, it was a fine looking ensemble. Basingstoke is certainly not too far if they have the same pattern books there as they do in Glasgow.
I know there are some vendors in the US who make stunning clothing and I didnt deliberately leave them out of the list. Its just that for the purpose that I compiled the list i.e sub $250 / $400 the cost of the postage and import duty takes the prices over this limit. No offence intended to any of our friends the other side of the pond.
I posted this list to perhaps give fellow Xmarkers a limited basis on which to make their own searches. I know that for me it would have saved me a lot of time if this info had been availlable.

Re: Tweed Jackets for Gentlemen of Substance
Hector Russell has limited tweed fabrics (only charcoal, denim blue, and lovat green) for 129gbp with vest another 50gbp. Does not approach the quality of some of the other bespoke or M2M jackets but seem sturdy enough when I tried them on in store last year. My recollection is that these are off the rack and not available in quite the extent of sizes, especially not with XL sleeve lengths, but I may be wrong about that. HR is a fairly well respected UK company with a number of stores in the big cities.
