    Phantom of the Opera

Well, I'm getting to be quite the cultured hillbilly. Broadway Across America brought Phantom of the Opera to San Antonio and I got tickets to take my wife to the next to last performance. I had several nice comments on the kilt as well as a couple of why the kilt questions. The production was great and the skill of the singers was terrific. At one point the Phantom is on his belly singing with no degradation in the quality of his voice. There were a couple of substitutions but all the singers were very talented.

We were rather amazed at the variety of dress by those attending, there were families with father in son in coat and tie and mother and daughter in nice dresses, men in khakis and wives/girlfriend in a dress or pantsuit, to folks that look like they were wandering the Riverwalk and came in. There were a quite a few females wearing dresses cut low and high so that little was left to the imagination. Overall it was a great experience and Heaven help me but I'll be taking my wife to more of these productions. Next time I'll take my flask though as the concession stand had no decent Scotch.

The pic below is my wife and I just before we headed out the door. The kilt is my Tewksbury McCallum tank.

You two look great. Hope you had a good time! Phantom is a great show.

I suppose I'm old-fashioned in that I always feel the need to dress up if I'm going out to the theater. I'm continually amazed by what people wear - up to (or down to) and including jeans and a tee-shirt. I might skip the tie and wear a turtleneck and sport coat to a matinee, but not to an evening performance. I mean, why bother going if you aren't going to dress up and make a night of it?

It is interesting how times have changed. I, like you, like to 'make a night of it' and get dressed up, but times were when people ate, drank, and talked through whole performances. They would cheer parts they liked and jeer the parts they didn't. The boxes were reserved for the rich and the floor for everybody else.

I am glad that the elitism and snobbery of classical music and live performance in concert halls is disappearing though. The fact that many people today don't own a jacket and tie shouldn't prevent them from enjoying live performances of symphonies, operas and other cultural events.

I'll continue to 'dress up' because I like to, not because I have to.

For the record, I don't think not owning a jacket and tie should prevent anyone from enjoying a performance. But you should dress nicely in whatever you do have.

Of course, call me old fashioned (or a snob. I may well be) but I think that every man who can afford it should own at least one suit. You never know when that sudden wedding/funeral/call to Buckingham Palace/the White House will come. Not that my father listens to me when I tell him that. ;)

Getting back on topic, I still think you look great, Sp8!

    You two look very nice.
My wife and I have always dressed up when going to the opera or concert house. Some years ago there was a period where the majority of the audience showed up in old jeans, thick sweaters and filthy hears, thereby making a huge difference to the musicians in their black tail coats, white shirts and ties.
Of course, no one should be excluded from these great moments of life just because they don’t own a suit or the like. But it wasn’t the case with most people. They probably had the fine clothes but preferred the utmost casual look. It had become a fashion.
The standard is going up, fortunately.

You really do make a wonderful looking couple,....very smart indeed.
"The Phantom" is a beautiful opera, and it sounds like you enjoyed it every bit as much as i did.

You both should be modelling highland gear.
