Nor Cal Kilt Hike Sat. November 8th (found on the 'net)

    Greetings Rabble,

I want to be clear here. I know nothing about this, other then the fact that I came across it on the Internet. Looks like they are trying to make it a monthly event. More information here. I'm not a hiker, and its not in my neck of the woods. I'm just passing it along in case any are interested.

    Best regards,

    Jake

Outdoor Kilt Hike, Mountain Piping concert, Scottish Pub after

This is will be our first Meetup event of the year, though not our clubs first event. We will meet outside the Pelican Inn at 10:00am. We will leave the Pelican Inn at 10:30am either separately or carpool it to the hiking spot about 5 miles away. After the hike we will return to the Pelican Inn for a brew.

The cost of the event is $5, which covers the cost of the Meetup membership, and will cover water bottles, etc. You are encouraged to bring your own picnic food or a drink. We will hike only about an hour, and then once at the top stop to listen to the flowing and haunting sound of pipes being played as it echoes throughout the valley. If you are piper, bring your pipes! You do not need to be a pro, I sure am not, but just have a decent sound that one can enjoy even if it is as simple as Scots Wa Hae. Each piper can take turns at playing their 3 best tunes, while the rest of us listen and enjoy the view and day. Also if you are a Robert Burns fan, bring your lines of word and be prepared to share with us your 3 favorites. If you play the Bodhran, or the Irish flute, heck bring it along. You will also be given 3 tunes to play, though might be hard to hear them over the pipes. :-)

As this is our first event, the hike will be a bit shorter than future planned hikes, just to gauge whether our new members are more into a good hard hike, or more into a good hearty ale.

KILTS ARE MANDATORY FOR MEN! Women come as you are. Kilts or other Scot hiking wear is definitely encouraged for the ladies. If you do not have a kilt, please do hesitate to contact me as I have some loaner cheapie sport kilts you can borrow for your first event to see what you think. But do contact me ahead of time, as I only have a limited number. If you would like a true Scottish Highland Kilt, i.e. the real deal, do contact me as I can hook you up with a good local kilt maker. There is nothing like hiking in the real thing. Real kilts are quite heavy, made of 16oz wool, and very very hearty. The cheap Pakistani stuff, Sport Kilts, or other casual kilts just do not even compare to the real thing, heavy and true made in Scotland.

This event is a fun party that just happens to occur in the mountains and finishes in the pub, so come ready to enjoy yourself. We welcome all men and women of all races whether Scottish or not. Two of our founding members were Chinese American and Korean American respectively. Actually, they still are, though......they have become a bit more Scottish after a few of these events. Also a great time to learn about Scottish culture.

I look forward to seeing all of you out there. Again, this is the first meeting, and the original group though starting small, is committed to making this a monthly event that will grow bigger over time as the lost art of Kilt hiking catches on.

Please note, other future events include Robert Burn's Day holiday January 25th (semi-formal, 34 people already pre-booked), listening to professional piping events, Rugby matches (yes in the kilt, real men not only wear kilts but also are ruggers), etc.

This sounds like serious fun... Pity I'll be in Pleasanton that day.

I just signed up--sounds like fun. I wonder if any of their members are on Xmarks? If not maybe we can sign them up here, too.

I just signed up too. If Xmarks makes a big showing in January, maybe we can get some of these folks to the DCB kilt night that month as well.

I have traded a couple of emails with Richard, the organizer of this group. He seems a nice sort, but was surprised at how quickly the group had taken off. I pointed him towards this site and mentioned that I knew several of us had signed up for his group after seeing M@A's post about it. He is also the man behind the bayareapiper website and he offered to loan me a Sportkilt or sell me something in a PV if I was interested.(I had asked about wearing a single color kilt for his event since it is clearly titled a Scottish Kilt group)

He is also trying to consolidate a couple of groups that were started up within Meetup as the original organizer was no longer interested in the group he had started.
