Do you believe this statement to be true?
"We live in a society where the guarantee of not starving to death is purchased at the price of dying of boredom" - Raoul Vaneigen
If so, what do you do to defend yourself against the evil tyranny of boredom?
For me, in no particular order, it's hiking, cooking, and photography,
And ending my sentences with commas rather than periods. That way noone will know when I'm done so I can string them along for hours while they foolishly wait for me to end the sentence. (Rub hands together) Mwaaaaaahahahaha

While I truly and greatly appreciate that I no longer need to spend my days toiling just to feed me and mine, I hardly think I'm in danger of boredom. Your quote and question brought a favorite quote of mine to mind:
"I still occasionally need to struggle, but I now fear it less. The weapons I fight it with are also my consolations: books, music, food, wine, nature."
-P.D. James, The Children of Men-

Hmmm. "books, music, food, wine, nature."
I do not see how anyone could be bored with those available.
I, too, have reached a certain place and station in life when I do not have to toil as I once did, but I still find myself too busy. I have a job and two half-jobs, two grandchildren, and a high-maintenance wife.
I am rarely bored.
And I think the statement you originally quote is not true. The purchase price of not starving is the loss of our freedoms. The pertinent quote is from, I believe, The Brothers Karamzov: (I paraphrase from memory) "In the end they will lay at our feet and say, 'make us your slaves, only feed us.'"

Lets see - I spend too much time working, then there's the kids, dogs & my lovely wife. If I had spare time I might scrape & paint the house, make a garden. I read when I can. Play banjo/violin/guitar & sing. I hope again to find time to make a model airplane. A few movies are nice. Bored? Hah! Too little time. I try to keep a book in the car, in my briefcase. I am reading 'The Way of the World' for the second time during down moments in court.

Boredom, rarely deal with that..
I have a Harley and I enjoy my time on the road, enjoying nature.
I have a laptop and enjoy XMarks, and searching the internet for what intrigues me (i enjoy learning)
I have many interests, which include Native American Powwows ( I been dancing for 25 years) Marine Corps Veteran gatherings, Grandchildren (3), and a Girlfriend.. LOL..
all of these keeps me on my toes.
I do not have to work so much to eat...LOL.. besides I require less than I used to, and I can still loose a few pounds.. well maybe more than just a few...LOL

I can't remember the last time I was bored. Too many interesting hobbies! A bored man is a man with no imagination.
