Re: Ties and kilts
Good point davidg. I was just asking for clarification. Personally, I "understand" that a tartan waistcoat is acceptable for more formal events. But I do not much care for them...nor do I like the look (on me especially) of matching tartan ties.

Re: Ties and kilts
I only have a couple of matching ties but I think they compliment the kilt

So, I guess it boils down to: it's in the eye of the beholder!
Absolutely! Go with how it looks; following the "it isn't done" line doesn't teach you anything about why!
On a previous thread, there was a photograph of a member wearing a tartan tie to match the kilt he was wearing, and then, another photograph of the member in the same outfit with a different tie. For me, seeing the two photographs together perfectly illustrated why a contrasting tie usually works better with a tartan kilt; the tie in the second photograph provided a visual contrast to the kilt, and because of that the whole outfit looked brighter and more interesting (at least to me). It was only after seeing the second photograph that I realized how uninteresting the first outfit looked; the tie blended in with the kilt. The contrasting tie made the same outfit look so much brighter and interesting; both the tie and the kilt stood out more. Try looking at yourself in a mirror with different ties with the same outfit, and choose the one you like best.

I wear my tartan tie with a regular suit or with a solid colour kilt...
I take the same view.
I do own various tartan ties besides my Ross Red, including Robert Burns Heritage Check (I consider myself a bit of a Burnsian), Hawick District and Teviotdale Districts, Partick Thistle FC, and Glasgow University.
I tend to wear them with Tweed sports jackets/Navy blazer and trousers, and maybe the Burns tie with my gray suits.

Re: Ties and kilts
I do not wear a tartan tie with the kilt. Some people do. It all depends how it is worn as to whether it is effective or not.
Of interest, perhaps, is this old photograph of my great-uncle and a friend. The picture was taken in the late 1920s or early 1930s in Argyllshire. My uncle is wearing a tartan tie and it doesn't look all that bad.

Re: Ties and kilts
I do wear my Tartan with and with out my kilt ,I would wear Tartan everything if I had anything esle in my Tartan , I would wear a LL Bean
Tartan shirt with a Tartan tie and my Kilt and Fly Plaid and My flashes.
But I love my Tartan and do not care what people think as I have found -it does not matter to me -I am all ready in a Kilt People are all ready looking at me wierd ... So I go all out , My avator ,I have on as much tartan as can.
But this is as said before Many time ,all in what the wearer want to wear.

Re: Ties and kilts
Oh, and even my father wore a tartan tie with the kilt on very rare occasions:

Oh, and that would be me, when I was much younger!
PS. Photo taken on 1 January, 1964.

I think part of why the photos above work is that your Great Uncle and your father were both wearing a waistcoat thus giving a visual break to the tartan. As an example here is a photo of a gent wearing the kilt with a matching tie, however without a waistcoat.

I really think that with the waistcoat is far preferable to without, if you must wear a tartan tie. Personally I do not care for the look myself and have never given much thought to wearing a tartan tie with the kilt.

Exactly right, Glen, a waistcoat makes all the difference in the world here.
Regardless of my father and great-uncle, I don't wear tartan ties with the kilt, ever.
