And, in most western societies it is customary for men to wear formal trousers in preference to skirts at society events with the notable exception of Scotland, where many men opt to wear kilts instead of formal trousers on special occasions.

I think folks are missing a key word...it is customary for men to wear kilts to a formal event in Scotland. Outside of Scotland, it doesn't appear to be the custom that most men will wear a kilt to a formal event. Most men still wear trousers to these events.

That shouldn't stop us from trying to change the custom around the world.

OK - I'm doing my part!

It is my custom to wear the kilt to formal events...... but it sounds better than it really is, 'cause I wear the kilt to everything except the nudist park, and the shower!
