Huh! You just beat me to the same question, Jock. I have never heard of such a coin (must be somethin' 'merican!). At first I thought it might be an emergency coin for a parking meter, public loo or telephone box, but I suspect it it something else altogether.

As to the original question: I really have no preference as to flashes style - I have all three. The only type I do not care for are the garter ties (sorry Glen) because I find they simply do not stay in place all day. The 1" wide elastic garters, whether supplied or home-made, are just fine for me. I do, however, have six pairs of flashes that were originally garter ties; I cut off the tassel ends and mounted them on elastic so that I could wear them with comfort.

    Take care,
    Ham.

    No problem Ham

Here I think we can agree to diagree, I was speaking from my own experience as I am sure you are as well, in this case anyway I say to each their own.

    PS
I've never heard of such a thing as a Challenge coin either, nice to see I'm in good company.

I wear single flashes, but my pipe band wears the flash-and-loop.

Oh, and a coin challenge is used in some groups or societies (our St. Andrews Society does it). Basically, everybody in the group gets a coin. If you're with other members, they can ask to see your coin (or you can ask to see theirs). If you (or they) do not have their coin, you (they) have to buy them a drink.

Most of my flashes are the double flash; however, I purchased a pair of second-hand, red flash-and-loops, which I like very much. I haven't seen the F-n-L types for sale, otherwise. Like many here, I very much favor the garter ties for informal and day wear.

My favourite is the tartan flash that matches the kilt. I have both single and double loop. I made them myself, an easy job, with the tartan cut on the bias.

BTW with the new kilts our local pipe band went to the ties.

If I go that route , I prefer the double flash, but I would rather wear the traditional garter ties / flash.

I prefer not to wear flashes. They look costumey to me. Just my two cents.
