    xman's Highland Kilt #6: Complete

A host of worldly things conspired to obstruct me during this creation, not the least of which were holiday celebrations that are like the Energizer Bunny, but also viruses which preferred to compound and mutate rather than be vanquished, and running out of carpet thread on New Years Eve Day, but it's finally done.

It's a 4 yard box pleat in Marton Mills' Cheviot Pheasant, a herringbone weave and more malleable as a fabric than worsted wool, but not too hard to work with. Pressing the bulky hem line was the real PITA with this because I didn't want to over press, but under pressing didn't seem to take well at all so I had to use something between light and hard pressure opting for more point pressing too. We'll see how it holds. Working with unpatterned fabric revealed some new challenges as well, but they were easily overcome with careful measurements and lots of basting stitch lines. Toward the end the kilt looked like it was virtually held together with basting stitches.

    Here's the interior.

Here are the nice brass buckles and oxblood Celtic embossed straps from Robert at RKilts. The recipient requested two external straps for fashion's sake so I easily obliged her. Since she won't be using a sporran it might actually hang a little nicer than otherwise.

Without further ado, please allow me to present my very own Validator (my wife) modeling her new tweed garment. This is my loving gift to her.

Oh, and while I was waiting for the shops to reopen after the holidays for more thread, I was able to make some progress on #7.

    X

Just sent her out the door in it and in the light of day I can see that the fell is too long. Drat! I have been experimenting with taking that measurement rather than averaging it. I'll have to do better.

Point number two: I would definitely work to make the hemline smoother. It shouldn't show. Double drat!

"Sleep is for fools who never live twice". ~ Pete Townsend.

Technically that's not true though. I've heard that for health reasons, each hour of sleep nets you an hour and a half of life. That's an extra half our of consciousness per hour of sleep for those who get their rest. That works out to be an additional 3 years for the man or woman who gets a full eight hours of sleep a night over the person who sleeps only six hours per night. Not to mention (but I will) the happier, healthier disposition of the well rested means that those are better quality years too.

I do burn the midnight oil a little bit.
