Best Hose colours to go with Nova Scotia Tartan

How about hose in your tartan colours, but with diamonds just in the cuff? This is a photo of the hose I had made to suit my Middleton kilt http://on.fb.me/kF9glZ. I've been on the search for some Claret hose and Yellow/Gold Hose to go with it. Seems come pay day I may have to buy some from the STM! So very few places that have those colour hose!

I was afraid to go with the Blue hose.. Didnt want to be overly "Matchy"

I think claret hose would go quite well with that one!

If you wanted to throw in a touch of yellow, you could have some custom tops made like these (substitute your yellow for the navy blue in the photo).

I like almost any sort of diced colourings with this particular tartan - red and green especially. Any solid colour of hose would do, with the exception of white or even the fawn/oatmeal colour. Coquet hose are something to consider as well, since you can select up to 3 different colours besides the colour of the hose themselves, for the chequerboard cuffs. Almost Unwearoutable has a superb selection and offer quick and easy service. Naturally, Matt Newsome is always a wonderful source for incredible kilt hose. Good luck!

Even without the cuff, I really like the marled effect. Any 2 contrasting colours would look good.

I agree that Claret would look quite nice. Besides Full Argyll hose, blue & green diced hose might look nice as well.

About red & white diced hose, they have had a long popularity in civilian Highland dress which predates their military adoption.

Very true. However, I was proffering my information of someone who lives in Nova Scotia and in close proximity to the 78th Highlanders base at Citadel Hill in Halifax.

In my previous post I mentioned the hose of the persons I had seen wearing the NS tartan and only used the examples of people I had seen not engaged in highland dancing as of course you know that dancers are always required to wear full tartan hose. But, dancers need a matching waistcoat or vest and the most striking combination of NS tartan I have seen was with a claret jacket.

You don't often see dancers wearing the NS tartan kilts, it's far more popular as aboyne costumes. Dancers prefer the dress NS tartan which is very striking.

Repectfully, though...the 78th is not a military unit, but a living history organization affiliated with The Citadel and Parks Canada. The old 78th hasn't been around since before the Cardwell Reforms of 1881.

That being said, I see your point about the hose being associated with that group, and I would bet the locals certainly would recognize them as such, but wearing diced hose with modern civilian rig isn't the same as trying to copy the 78th.

As this thread was about hose, I did not proffer any further info re. the 78th especially as everyone here in NS knows exactly who and what the 78th is (the current poster boy for NS Tourism, a 78th Highlander, is the brother of one of my dance school buddies). The 78th is extremely active here in NS and as I say, the red/white diced hose is pretty much seen exclusively on them and not on civilians for everyday wear. Here in NS, I've only seen ONE instance of a civilian wearing the red and white diced and that was at a very formal event. For everyday wear, I've never seen it and that's been over 16 years of living in NS, attending many highland events and games here and in the other Maritime provinces.
I was only trying to say that if the OP were living in NS and decided to wear the red and white diced hose for everyday wear, I can guarantee that most people would ask him if he was associated with the Citadel. And sadly, if he wore the NS tartan kilt in Halifax, people might even ask if he was a doorman at the Delta.

The fellow who wore them for formal rig was spot on; unless I was reenacting a certain unit that wore them, I wouldn't wear them for everyday wear either.
