Take blue jeans: especially when considered to be in style, they're made all over the world but everyone knows- because they can see- that the only good ones are the brand names made in the USA. If Scottish kilts maintain the same sort of quality lead, they will be known that way. The only question would be, can Scottish makers stay sufficently out in front? US jean makers have an equal social advantage but also have the added advantage of the availability of very cheap cotton.
