Do not forget that many of the men, if not all, in Kenneth MacLeay's, The Highlanders of Scotland, series, were provided with the best Highland attire that could be mustered, in all its finery and glittering accessories, by their respectable Chief or Chieftain and in some cases, arranged personally by MacLeay. Of course, we realise the main purpose behind this was because each man was sitting for their portrait to be painted by MacLeay, who in turn was originally commissioned by HRH Queen Victoria. HRH wished for her beloved Highland subjects to look their best for the folio! Which makes complete sense.

Wonderful though these pictures are, and they undoubtedly are, they should be put into the same class as Harry Potter, Star Trek, Tom and Jerry and Micky Mouse when it comes to fanciful thinking and have little to do with true examples of Highland attire worn by the majority of Highladers at that time. To coin a phrase: "Eye candy for a Queen", no more, no less.
