I really think that with the waistcoat is far preferable to without, if you must wear a tartan tie. Personally I do not care for the look myself and have never given much thought to wearing a tartan tie with the kilt.
Exactly right, Glen, a waistcoat makes all the difference in the world here.
Regardless of my father and great-uncle, I don't wear tartan ties with the kilt, ever.
