For me, avoiding wearing a tie and kilt in the same tartan isn't about too much tartan... I've been known to wear a tartan kilt and waistcoat set! It's more a question of what I'm used to seeing, which would be solid colour or regimental/school striped ties.
As an aside, I'm pleased that the university I'm doing my exchange at in Hong Kong has striped ties in the school colours: purple and gold. I look forward to wearing one with the kilt, without any consideration of whether or not it matches my tartan
And if one did want to wear a tie and kilt in the same tartan, JSFMACLJR's pictures showing that combo paired with a tweed jacket and waistcoat would be a good way to go. I agree with McMurdo, the visual break of a tweed waistcoat between tie and kilt is pleasing.

Re: Ties and kilts
It appears generally accepted that a break between kilt and tie is acceptable as with a waistcoat.
Personally, I like the look of a matching tartan bow tie rather than just plain black bow tie when wearing my Prince Charlie jacket & vest.
I like it and I feel comfortable.

I can say I am lucky in as much as my Alma Mater has several ties. The University of Glasgow Tie (often called the graduate tie, and only worn in my experience by graduates) is black with narrow gold stripes in the 'regimental' style. I do sometimes wear it with my tweed argyle kilt daywear. There are also solid blue ties with the University crest, as well as the University tartan tie.

Those sound like some good options!
Unfortunately, my home university doesn't have any ties, so I was very pleased to find out that my exchange university does. My college within the exchange uni also has solid colour ties with many small college crests, so I will probably pick up one of those as well.
Neither of these fine educational institutions has tartan ties, unfortunately Although I suppose that even if they did, it would be quite rare to see a kilt in that tartan to go with the tie

Where's Ham on this? I hear his loud "No!!" ringing in my ears still.
Yet I have three tartan ties to match my kilt tartans and have been known to wear them with the matching tartan kilt.
A sweater is also a nice way to break up the space between the tie tartan and kilt tartan.
I pretty much hate ties, don't need them for work, seldom wear them...

Re: Ties and kilts
My two cents: I think it looks good with the waistcoat. I would not wear a tartan tie with a tartan waistcoat but I would and do wear the same tartan as my kilt with a waistcoat. I like the old photos above. Thanks for posting those!

Location, location, location
It can be done well even without a waistcoat. I think Sir Lachlan Maclean of Duart and Morvern looks quite sharp here and the choice of the muted tie makes all the difference to me.
