With a bit of ingenuity, you don't have to stitch at all. One strip tied like a tie and then tucked into the shirt. A second piece (more rectangular), folded concertina like and tucked 1/3 in, leaving 2/3s hanging out the front.
That's what I did the first time. I was the only one wearing a jabot and I don't think anyone noticed.
The thing is, the commercially made ones are really not value for money. It is worthwhile looking out for a good piece of antique lace and getting a local seamstress to make you one.
