Just an idea here on yarn (one that your yarn shop won't appreciate too much). My wife buys wool sweaters from GoodWill and unravels them. For a buck or two, she gets enough wool for at least two pair of hose. She made herself some cashmere/silk stockings (the sweater was a blend) for six bucks, which is more than she usually pays but she didn't want to miss getting it. She usually waits for $0.99 sale days. If you look, you can get merino, cashmere & all kinds of blends. Just make sure the sweater is fully knitted, not sewn/surged side seams.
My grandmother used to do something of the sort, recycling (woven) woolen garments into hooked rugs. We treasure the ones that have survived the decades since.
But I have trouble working even with the lightly kinked yarn of my own "make overs," can't imagine having success with that level of recycling. Glad it works for your wife!
