Arlen's Garter Ties help...

I am a total knitting newb. I've used one of those spiral cast-off devices to make tubular garter ties but because they are tubular, the fringe ends up looking like a toorie (on orange hose, green garters make my leg look like a giant carrot).

I would like to make a pair of Arlen's host as outlined in this thread. The problem I am having, well, is everything. I don't think I even understand the concept of "cast off".

Just imagine that a 5 year old with two left hands wanted you to explain knitting, and you'll have a good where I'm at with this approach.

there are several ways to do it, but if you have managed to knit the garters , you will find it very easy here is a video which should help

Ok, lad. You're about as near to done as if you never started. First, Arlen's garters are between 8 and 10 stitches. If you can start a row - "cast on" - then do 8 - 10 stitches, then turn it and do the same. Repeat until desired length achieved. Then "cast off." You only have a few so it can't be too hard, can it? I think it shows it pretty well.

Incidentally the going forward with the knit stitch and then turning and turning and turning comes out with something they call the garter stitch. It has a certain amount of flex to it so it makes good garters.

Ok, figured out the cast on.

But it gets jacked as soon as another needle is introduced to the party. My wife has promised to help me this evening - hopefully I'll have some nice red, extra-long garter ties to show off this evening.

The gal gets a little wordy sometimes, but once you have watched the main video(s) once or twice there are also links to shorter versions that just show the basics of the stitch. Most videos are available for either English (holding yarn in right hand) or Continental (holding yarn in left hand) so make sure you click the correct link for the way you are learning!
