Re: Are caubeens made of unicorn hide?

I have balmorals from both Glengarry and Mackey and find the quality similar except for the fact that the Mackeys can be ordered with true adjustable fit ribbons or in a fixed size with sewn on ribbons, and the latter can have a bow permanently sewn into the ribbon as well, I believe.

Re: Are caubeens made of unicorn hide?

You just missed mine on the trade forum... maybe

I will say that they are a lot different to a balmoral... Mine came from alltartan in ontario, but I'm not sure if they carry them anymore...

I got a glengarry from them too which feels as if it has hessian stiffening... Cant complain about either of them or the regimental tam o'shanter or balmoral (gave away to a friend who'd managed to misplace his)...

Only reason I'm getting rid of the caubeen is that I'm never going to wear it... especially with the ToS...

Mossie Croft on ebay are made in Ireland, ergo they are the real thing.

    Excellent quality and good prices.

the Irish Caubeen here is very close to issue. The issue ones are a bit thinner and do not have the round rosette.

Now, a note from Jackson. The Canadian forces who wear this simply call it a tam. It is actually a caubeen but depending on which unit you are in it is worn differently. One way of wearing it is to shape it till it is all down in the front about like a flat cap. For the other style the soldiers buy them about two sizes too small and then shape them till they are almost beret type skullcaps.
Actually, the Irish Regiment of Canada (IRoC) DO wear the caubeen which is not the same as the tam worn by other Canadian Highland/Scottish regiments. It is the same caubeen as worn by the Irish regiments in the British Army, complete with rosette. I'm not sure where they get them from. Possibly the same supplier?

I have a JByous and it's very well constructed. It's one of his heavy weights. Thing is, though, it was marked as a 58, but it fits more like a 56. If you choose this particular Caubeen, you won't be disappointed.

My caubeen is from Glengarry Hats and I'm pleased with it.

Second that, JByous bonnets are a great value.

The latter; that is the way that the London Irish wear their caubeens:

Yup. The IRoC wear the caubeen the same as the London Irish. I believe the hackle colours are the same as well; blue for officers, green for others.
