I believe it has come about in large part due to Facebook's "Like" button in which you can "Like" a post without actually having to take the time to comment on the post. It is a way to show support for the post, but at the expense of any sort of interaction with the original poster. Just my 2 pence worth.

I have a Facebook account, but I almost never use it. I forgot about the "Like" feature - pretty convenient, if one doesn't want to comment. Thanks for reminding me.

I cannot understand why one would be concerned about the number of times they post, though displaying that statistic gives others a first-order idea about how active a person is on the forum, through duration or activity.

That's a good idea until you find that most of their posts are just *** or Well said! Makes me ignore them, kinda like the boy who cried wolf too often. Shame really, but if someone can't post anything meaningful for 90% of their posts, the remaining 10% is not worth bothering about even if it turns out to be something interesting.

Bravo! Bravo! You must have been reading my mind. Sometimes when I see those who use the *** repeatedly, I just skip to the next thread. I come here to learn and enjoy all things kilts.

A rather interesting approach. I post ***'s and will say, "Well said," or something to that effect at times, and why not? I also contribute to the forum by responding to various threads and posts in a much more meaningful way, as well as starting new threads. I do not see anything wrong with "liking" someone's comment, or agreeing with them and sometimes not saying anything else. Does every response have to be a thesis paper? I don't think so and certainly do not expect others to respond in such a manner. We are all engaged in conversation on here, are we not?

Jock, I agree that you shouldn't have to post a thesis or even more than a word or two. Hell, I don't even care if you use the ***. There are those post as DixieCat stated: "someone can't post anything meaningful for 90% of their posts, the remaining 10% is not worth bothering about even if it turns out to be something interesting.", and never say much more. That is the point that I think is being made here.

Your post are nearly always knowledgeable and interesting and I usually enjoy reading your posts. I think this is the intention of the site.

What I find amazing is that this thread has reached 11 pages (and I admit I only read pages 1 and 2 and then skipped right to the end)...when I have had several kilt related posts barely clear 10 or 12 responses. HMMMMMM.

I think there are two reasons for the popularity of this thread:

The erudition of its content. Where else can you read about ***, pi, pie, etc.?

The widely disparate views on the prudence and value of "***" as a post.
