It was always the accepted thing to wear tartan hose with a kilt. In more recent times, however, the cost of such hose has forced people into cheaper alternatives. Hence the white or self coloured hose so prevalent nowadays. It really is just a sign of the times when people dress in whatever they can buy cheaply. In the 1950's and before, if you wanted a suit or a highland dress outfit you went to a bespoke tailor and had it made for you. It wasn't cheap but it would probably last you a lifetime and you wouldn't be tempted to discard it for next year's latest fashion. And you wore it - to weddings, funerals, church, anywhere really -mainly because that was all that you had and it had cost you a fortune and you weren't about to waste it. Nowadays so much clothing is produced in Asian sweatshops and costs less than the price of a bus ticket. With the result that is is not valued or appreciated and, if you don't like it you put it in the bin.
So please don't exercise yourself unduly about the hose you wear. Buy the best you can afford and wear it.
