Macpherson/Chattan
Is it proper to wear a Chattan tartan and still represent my Macpherson bloodline. I am going to be purchasing both but didn't know how that works in the world of kilt wearing. Second is is proper to wear the faded, ancient or weathered look to formal occasions. The distressed look has always caught my eye but haven't been around enough people in kilts at formal occasions to notice.

I am sure some of our Macpherson members will chime in, but for now,

You'll receive better answers than I can give from others more knowledgeable, but I'm quite sure that "weathered" is quite fine so long as the kilt is well made.
Meanwhile, welcome, and you might want to post an introduction here: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f108/ You'll be pleasantly surprised by the welcome you'll receive.
Cheers!

Well, my Wiife and Son 1 both wear their Chattan to all Confederation events, including MacPherson, and when my Chattan Tank is finished so will I.(Chattan by Marriage) I also subscribe to the idea that if you like a Tartan you should wear it, excepting the restricted Tartans. so ...
Be well and welcome

Yes and yes (see my photos below).
There are several Macphersons that I know, who choose to wear the weathered/reproduction tartan for black tie affairs, though by far, the dress Macpherson tartan is the most popular and widely worn amongst the clan. At the annual Clan Macpherson Gathering and Rally in Newtonmore and Kingussie, Inverness-shire, Scotland, you will find Macphersons wearing every type of Macpherson sett in almost every type of colour scheme, yet the hunting Macpherson tartan (the Breacan Glas, or "the grey plaid of Cluny") like the dress variant for black tie affairs, is by far the most popular tartan amongst the clan.
However; as I eluded to previously, you will see Macphersons wearing the Chattan tartan, the the red-based sett in modern, ancient and weathered/reproduction hues, the hunting sett in ancient and modern hues, and the dress sett in ancient and modern hues. Some Macphersons have their tartan made in the colours from Wilson's of Bannockburn, which is quite lovely as well. You will also see Macphersons, who are connected to the Clan Macpherson by their associated surname (sometimes referred to as "septs'), wearing their own tartan. For example, there are Smiths (Gow), Gillies, and Clarks that I know of that choose to wear their respected tartan, which is perfectly acceptable as well. There are no rules, regulations, or restrictions...only good taste!
For daytime events, I primarily wear the red-based, Macpherson tartan in the reproduction colour scheme from D.C. Dalgliesh.
The Chattan tartan (modern colours) worn by my cousin, Bruce Macpherson of London.
The weathered Macpherson tartan (Lochcarron Strome) worn by George Macpherson of Laggan and his lovely bride at our annual Clan Macpherson Ball at the Duke of Gordon Hotel in Kingussie.
The dress, hunting and red-based sett in the weathered colour scheme, all seen together for black tie.
Cheers,

I'm not a MacPherson but a Davidson, also a member of Chattan Confederation. Any clansman of the clans of the Confederation can wear Chattan tartan and badges and be completely proper. And the formality of a kilt outfit with a traditional kilt depends primarily on the jacket and accessories chosen, not the color scheme of the kilt.

Thank you... You have helped me make a decision. I'm going with the weathered look of Mr. George Macpherson.
