That is sweet and quite a respectable sgian , well done !!

I was wondering about the comfort level . I have an antler handle sgian that I ground off some on the back , exactly as you stated for the same reason . I didn't have a bench grinder ... so I clamped the sgian down and used a hand held drill with a grinding bit . Worked pretty well ... if that's any help .

Of course , as you said , after wearing it at the pub for hours you forgot it was there . I can relate to that , after hours at the pub ... I forget my shoes are there .

All kidding aside , that is a fine sgian indeed , nice work !

Antler is easy enough to grind, but like I said, the steel bolster extends past the handle a bit and it would be great to make that flush. Do you think a grinding drill bit is up for the task of shaving 3 mm of steel all around?

Yes , I think you will be okay with grinding the steel . There are many grinding wheel drill bits that will easily grind metal .

Here is a pic that is similar to what you need :

There are many different types of these wheel bits , it depends on the hardness of the stone as to it's use . You should be able to pick one up at a local hardware store , check the info on the package to make sure it will grind metal .

Hope this helps , Cheers Mike .

    Version 2.1

So I ground down the protruding metal on the bolster with a bit I already had that was similar enough to Mike's. It took a long time, so perhaps it wasn't the exact tool for the job but I got it done. I followed the grinder bit with a file, then sand paper and then steel wool to smooth and polish everything.

    Before:

This is what I ended up with:
