    Anniversary Dinner

My parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary next week. The whole family is meeting at a nice restaurant.

Mother asked this morning, "Do you have anything to wear to our party?"

"You know that I do. I was thinking Isle of Skye..."

"Trousers. Do you have nice trousers?"

    "No kilt?"

    "No kilt."

    "I think I have a suit"

"Don't wear a suit. No one else will be in a suit"

"That's because I am not in charge"

"Point taken. Just wear trousers, okay?"

So, the hosts have dictated saxon attire for this event. I think I actually do need to buy nice trousers. Every dressy event since I started kilting 5 years ago has been kilted. In fact, the only reason I even have a saxon sport coat that fits is that I picked one up at a second hand/charity shop to convert to a kilt jacket. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Gee, that seems discouraging! What does your mother have against kilts?

If you have a suit, just wear the suit trousers and a nice shirt. I much prefer wearing a kilt myself, but until kilts are more widely accepted, I believe there are times to just go bifurcated.

Wear some nice crisp pressed docker style shorts, a dress shirt tucked in with a glossy finish belt with gold buckle, boat shoes with no socks....

It's classic Chicago attire, sure to invoke requests for the return of the kilt.

If only I had time to grow a mullet between now and then.

She's never been a fan, but she's done her part here and there to enable my addiction. Fair is fair. It's her party and it's trousers for me that night.

Indeed. A tartan vest is appropriate.

A mom will have to have at least one moment that affirms they are in charge of something. Subtle will get your point across to her and maybe a nod that you can compromise.

Shame on not growing the mullet in time.

Grit your teeth and surprise them once you've turned up with the kilt on they can't send you home
