A Net search will find pics of men casually attired in tartan kilts without sporrans. Not a lot, but some.
Would it be much different to wear a roomy sporran over a hip than a satchel bag on a hip slung over the shoulder? Probably not.

    Jacobite sporran

Have you considered a larger Jacobite style sporran? they surprisingly hold quite a bit of stuff. If comfort is a factor, I personally found it took a bit of time getting used to wearing a sporran.

I never go without my sporran but I am very happy to have my man bag on holiday for cameras passports keys suntan lotion etc. A sporran is just for a handful of oats?

I carry a European Satchel, aka man bag, murse ect. It goes with me Kilted or not. It's custom made by a leatherworker, who originally made it for me to store/carry a laptop computer and a certain machine tool invented by John Moses Browning, and later adopted by the US Army in 1911.

There is just no way to carry a tablet/laptop, pocket book (Yes a small notebook, not a woman's wallet) pipe and trappings, a multi tool, coffee thermos, spare magazines and all the other gear needed to run me for a day in the pockets or belt!

Having a barren field of, well you know what I mean, is vitally important.........

Agreed! In that situation, I too have carried an over-the-shoulder courier bag or "murse" if that's the preferred name. It's closer to a small briefcase with a large over-the-top flap. Very useful for meetings when I'm moving about to various locations in a building or outdoor area. Particularly useful if I need a laptop or tablet or a binder, and yes, magazines if there will be a lot of waiting about.

. . . but, if that's also a kilted day, I still wear the sporran because a kilt without one doesn't look to me like a ikilt, but rather something else, and it's a much more secure place for my wallet and car keys than a bag that I might un-sling from my shoulder.

In general, when I endeavor to dress in a traditional highland manner, I am usually wearing a jacket and waistcoat. The jacket and waistcoat hold much of my stuff. Very little goes in my sporran.

When I am dressed more casually, I have no problem carrying a shoulder bag. I've even forgone the sporran when carrying that bag.

As hot as it has been part of this summer, I would say use whatever woks without getting heat sickness. If it's a manbag or large sporran does not matter, go with what works for you. In more traditional settings a sporran would most likely be accepted better, yet in a casual setting I doubt anyone would care.

When it is a cooler temperature I agree with the jacket holding quite a bit, yet when it gets to 90, 100, or the rear in Colorado 110+ degrees Fahrenheit (upper 30s to mid 40s Celsius) the jacket and vest/waistcoat are far to hot. As the OP if in AZ, USA where over 110 happens more often I think he has the issue of extreme high temperatures and is looking for something other then a sporran to hold more then most sporrans hold without adding additional layers.

When I'm at a Highland Games, I carry on my shoulder a linen haversack that I got from Townsends:

Frankly, I carry a soft-sided leather briefcase to and from work. Same as a big man-purse, as far as I'm concerned.

In my personal opinion a kilt just doesn’t look right without a sporran, even if one had a satchel or jacket pockets making it unnecessary. I would vote for a manbag in addition to a sporran if necessary as opposed to in lieu of.
