    BBC: Scot Language

The BBC's Public Radio International show The World had a four-minute feature about the Scot language today. You can hear it here:

    http://www.theworld.org/wma.php?id=12289

The report features Matthew Fitt talking about his book "The Eejits."

You should also be able to navigate to http://www.theworld.org/, then on the left under features select December 28, 2006. Finally, scroll down to the audio file for "Scot Language Report."

I'm eager to hear what P1M thinks! I've always envied Scots and the accents that accompanies it. I'm terrible at it.

Eejits? There's been a book named after me?

It's always peculiar to hear the term, "Lang may yer lum reek", because across here I've always heard, "Lang may yer lum reek, wey ower foak's coal."

Dinnae telt me we ur maire froogal aboot thangs, hair 'n th' colonies.

Thanks for the link. I heard part of this on my PRI station on the way home yesterday, but didn't get the whole thing. Now I can hear it all.

This is fantastic... Just this morning at work I wished our receptionist and a fellow co-worker a Happy Hogmanay. She replied "Lang may yer lum reek, laddie" She is welsh born, the other coworker said "Oh my gosh ain't heard that in ages.. "my dad always added"wey ower foak's coal" she was born in Scotland!" Than the receptionist asked if I was a "first-footer", I stated " Och No! not this year.. my freinds are out of town". She said not bad for a Mexican....

Than they started telling stories about their youth, "first footer carried coal and money" the other said "It was coal and Bread". I said in my house it was Menudo made on New Year Eve, and we than only were allowed to eat it after midnight! .( I never eat the tripe but the hominay)
