The normal "Scottish" phrase would be to add an s..

    Hoots Mon nae Hoot Mon.

Just as in the joke about the difference between the bad marksman and the constipated owl!

Hoots with an "s" it is!
Actually I don't think she knew what she was saying. I think that she just wanted to acknowlege the kilt in a good joking way. Like I said she was smiling.
I didn't mind. After the commute in, it was good to get a pretty smile :-)
It don't mean a thing, if you aint got that swing!!

Not exactly sure what it means but I'd venture to say that most of those cliches and stereotypical "Scottish" caricatures harken back to music halls and vaudeville performers....I've never seen Harry Lauder (he is featured in several old films that I' ve been trying to look up) but growing up as a kid in the '50's in the USA, I saw plenty of caricatures of him in old cartoons that ran on the telly almost all day long. I know that "hoot, mon" showed up in those a lot. Don't take umbrage, though, because EVERY ethnic group got made fun of in vaudeville...it was a case of the immigrants laughing at themselves.

In the general populace of the world? Very few. But the same goes for men.
