Here in the UK blood is donated for altruistic reasons.

They won't take mine mine now (as a diabetic) except for periodic tests.

So once I have mastered the pipes I can hire myself out for weddings, funerals and Bar Mitzvahs etc instead!

Well the thread title certainly made me look. Initial reaction of shock horror as there have been recent high profile cases in Europe of clinical trials of new medicines on healthy young men which went catastrophically wrong resulting in death or permanent disability. I suppose though, taking part in MRI scan trials is a lot less risky than swallowing new drugs, so good luck to you. One way of funding a kilt.

I do give blood on an unpaid voluntary basis, usually a pint twice a year. A professional colleague who served in the South African army tells of conscripts being marched to the clinic to give compulsory blood donations.

Whew!! That doesn't sound too bad. First thing I thought about when I saw the title was the material I've been looking at on the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science's web site about the BODY WORLDS exhibit -- getting Plastinated would probably do away with your need for kilts!!

for the record, the title was more for initial shock value. Rest assured, there will be pictures when it comes. My mother actually works for the university and that was how I found out. I've actually been in another study recently that was just a sleep study. That one did not pay however but it was still fun. I'll also be sure to try and post some of the MRI pictures up here as well.

Yes, that's how it works here in the US too. We donate whole blood for medical needs.

The selling of plasma is a different thing and is done through pharmaceutical companies. They use the plasma for things like extracting clotting factor or, in my case, extracting tetanus anti-toxin.

And, by-the-way, this must date me, because I only got $20 a week when I did it.

Don't get your hopes up if you've body art

For those of you who get tattooed on a regular basis (more than once a year) they might not want your blood, when I was looking into donating I was turned down, 'cuz it'd been less than a year since my last tat.

Kizmet, I wish I could say that was possible but my only current kilt is a UK which has metal snaps on it and requires a belt as well. Metal and MRIs tend no to mix well, otherwise I would have because I am sure it would have been more comfortable.
