I've heard 2" from the side, 4" from the bottom. Then again it could depend on the size and shape. Go by eye.

This is kind of hart do explain, but ...

I stand with my legs about shoulder width apart. The pin goes dead center over the front of my right leg (adjusted slightly if there is a dominant thread near by - less than 1/4" - to center on). Bottom of the pin right at the top of the hollow before the top of the knee.

I'd post a pic, but I can't find a single one that shows a pin

OK - Since you asked, here is the definitive answer. All other answers are wrong!

Bottom of kilt pin is 3 11/16" from lower edge and exactly 3" from right edge, unless the pattern of the tartan makes the pin look weird, then start adding and subtracting 3/16" from right and bottom edges until it feels right........

    Got it?

Of course not. Marines have no sense of humor I've been able to detect.

Well, then you haven't been looking hard enough. Our best humor is when we laugh at ourselves!

Without being able to laugh at myself, I never would have made it through boot camp.

Also as definitive proof that Marines have a sense of humor, I offer the fact that they promoted me, over and over again!!!

I wear mine about 3" up and 3" in, at an intersection of lines.

Basically, unless you are wearing the kilt as part of a uniform, there are no regulations about the placement of the pin.

Basically, put it in the general region of the lower corner of the outer apron. Then just eyeball it to where it looks best based on the tartan.

Mine tend to be a few inches up from the botton and a couple from the side, adjusted based on the tartan.
