McGurk - I just noticed, sometimes I'm slow, that you are in the UK. Surely there are kilt shops over there? How about an x-hire sporran? It should be worth the time to call around to those places locally that rent kilts and see if one of them might have something used to sell.
Sure the exchange rate is pretty good for you blokes right now, but I sure would think that there might be something more locally.

I've been happy with my brown leather sporran and sporran strap from What Price Glory. http://onlinemilitaria.net/shopexd.asp?id=1980&bc=no
There's no picture, but it's a reproduction of the standard issue military sporran.

Low cost sporran
I got a Buzz Kidder for about $50 and use it a lot for hiking. I'll use it until I can save up for a Thorrfin. I'd say go with the Buzz Kidder, they are functional, look great, hold a lot, and are around your pricepoint.

I bought a stillwater sporran just to have so that I could lend it out to friends that were kilting for the first time. It's not a top notch product and doesn't really compare with the other sporrans I have, but it's definitly worth more than SWK is charging for it.
It's a steal for $16.50 and it will work very well. I highly recommend it for the price.

Having said that, low cost and good and leather may not go together here.
Questions arise:
Is this going to be a sporran that you wear everyday, and will get hard use?
What is your definition of low cost?
How many things do you want to carry around?
Casual or dressy?
Dressy or formal?
$55.00 for a Buz Kidder is a pretty good price for a quality product. But it is a basic leather pouch.
$25.00 is a good price for probably the best casual sporran available today - regardless of price!
I know of no low cost quality formal sporran.
If you are going to be using the sporran on a daily or frequent basis, save up your money for a Freedlander or Thorfinn sporran. They will serve for all but the most formal of times.
How 'bout the best of both worlds? It's functional, yet it looks like something you can go to something formal as well.

I suspect that low cost, good, and leather are a classic trio---you can have any two of the three. If you go with that $16.50 job you should expect hard, stiff leather that may even be plastic coated so that even mink oil and neatsfoot oil can't soften it.

No - get the nylon nightstalker for casual wear and then when ever Jerry finally gets his order in (which many of us have been waiting, like forever for) order the leather version for those dressy times.
That's what I plan on doing!
