This kind of pleating works well when all of the colors are comparable in tone. If there's a lot of contrast from stripe to stripe, you tend to get the dreaded lawn chair effect.

You can't make this work with box pleats unless you have a tartan with a really big single color block. The brown block in the IOS is only a bit more than an inch across. You'd really need a tartan with about a 2" single color block to have enough width of single color for a "no stripe" pleat. Not many tartans meet this requirement, actually.
