Marton Mills weaves it in 16oz and 13oz wool. I have a swatch of it sitting right here on my desk tempting me. They are rather affordable as far as cloth goes (about $30 a meter US+ Import duties for the 16oz)
They do send free swatches if you e-mail them and inquire. I have some MacArthur material from them and it is really nice. All you would have to do is decide how you want it made and find a kilt maker..or do what I did, and order Barb's book and make it yourself (I suggest trying a few first in less expensive material with her method before you start on the good stuff.)

Who now lists Barb's book on her list of things to grab first in case of natural disaster..it's second only after my dogs (ya and I guess my sisters cat!)

Which apparently aren't available any longer. Oh well, my vote would be for the 8-yard from Lochcarron. I have a 4-yard strome in Gordon Moderen and an 8-yard strom in IOS, and while the box pleat is supremely comfortable, so is the 8 yard, in a different way, and the wool just feels different, even though same weight, same mill.

Please ignore the large smiling guy and focus on the kilt!

Hey Splash, it's the man that makes the kilt, not the kilt that makes the man.

Thanks, Barbara, for your information. You showed exactly what I was aiming at, viz, emphasizing the impact of the vertical over the horizontal.

Ron, I have only one word for your photo....stunning! Your photo and that of Splash have given me second thoughts about a larger man being able to wear one.

I also like your grouse-foot kilt pin. I just acquired one on ebay yesterday and am awaiting delivery. Now I guess I'll need an IOS kilt to go with it.

As many have said on this forum, a kilt is very slimming. A well-made and well-fitting kilt on a gentleman of substance looks, I think, much better than a suit.

    Cheers!

Speaking as a person "of substance" - read that bigger & fatter than I should be, I know that Barb is right. My wife, the ultimate authority for me in this area for me, says the same thing.

A kilt is very slimming on those of us who are slim to begin with, too... Epecially with a military rise. I love my new Black Watch, but it makes me look like a twig wrapped in tartan!
