I only wear a topper if I'm piping, and in such a case, it is always a black glengarry with a black band and red tourie (Squint at my avatar). I'm not crazy about hats - it's just another thing that can fall off of me when I bend over. Then, I have to bend over farther to pick the thing up, which can cause other things to fall off of me..
I also have a lighter blue 'boneid' that I wear at The Texas Renaissance Festival up the road each Fall.
I did buy a black beret from the Army Navy Surplus Store, but I have not worn it much.
I'm surprised to see that several who have posted here wear the Irish caubeen. I'm much impressed by this more conservative bonnet as I find the red touries on the Glangarries and balmorals distasteful for my head.
For utilitarian purposes (read, 'shade'), I have worn my broad-brimmed cowboy hat at the Texas Scottish Festival at Arlington. This festival is held the first weekend in June, and it is either blistering hot or pouring rain. BTW, in that heat, I STILL wear a 16 oz. kilt!!
