Thanks for the welcome and please do post the pics - I'm dying to see real-life pics of the Nightstalker before I take the plunge. As I said, at the moment I'm torn between that and waiting for the Black Shadow Heavyweight, but as that's an open-ended wait (weight? lol) I'm getting anxious to going ahead and buying my first kilt.

Thanks Turpin. I'm flattered both that I might be the first Liverpudlian on here and that you actually knew the correct term for someone from Liverpool. It might not seem a big deal to some but it is to me

Wecome from the North Carolina highlands. You're just 2 hours down the road...well within striking distance for a kilt night event. If you are feeling a bit "let down" by Winston culture, come up to Asheville for a weekend for a quick fix of "alternative Southern."

Another Welcome from an NC native. You should fine plenty of occassions to wear the kilt around our state and adjacent states. Check out the Loch Norman Games in April, then of course there's the Grandfather Mtn games.

Thanks for the welcome and info, bchunter. My wife has mentioned the Grandfather Mountain Games before - she happened to be nearby a few years before meeting me and tells me that it was murder trying to find somewhere to stay. We'll probably try to give it a go this year though

Welcome aboard from a peninsula in the Chesapeake Bay. You'll learn a lot here. Enjoy your first kilt, I just received mine within the past month and have been kilted twice so far. Enjoy, it's addicting!

It is not a bad day trip from Winston.
If you like to camp there is plenty of room if you do not wait till Friday to
go set up your tent. Boone has some good places to stay if you book
    early enough.
We usually have a good turnout of Xmarkers.

I'd probably go for the camping idea - it's one of the things I miss most about my old stays in the Highlands. There's really nothing quite like opening your tent to see Ben Nevis towering over you or the Isle of Skye in the distance on a warm (yes, they happen sometimes) Scottish morning. The only thing that might throw us when it comes to camping this year is that we had a baby girl 4 months ago, so a tent might not be the most practical idea for the next year or so. Time will tell!

We actually camped in Boone at the KOA Campground a couple of years ago, but it rained non-stop for the whole time we were there. Considering how everyone I speak to tells me that it's always raining where I'm from, I've seen far more of the stuff since moving to NC than I did back home!

Thanks Jock. We were only talking about your neck of the woods yesterday while watching an episode of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Is the snow sticking?
