I like # 2, but 1 and 3 would work. 4 seems a bit … much … for a funeral. They'd also look nice on formal occasions with a PC and white/cream hose.

Being that my forth coming Modern Mackay is very dark I wouldn't have a problem wearing it to a funeral.
Having said that however, I am partial to #2, followed then by #1.
And no, I wouldn't have a problem wearing any of those outside of a funeral, they are rather nice looking (I'm partial to darker tartans) and really who in my neighborhood is going to know they are called mourning tartans?

The only "hearless b*stard" here is me because I stole the Maple Leaf out from under you. Personaly I prefere #2. I don't think that the grey not showing up too much of a problem. Consider the SWK Nightstalker, every pic I've seen he grey shows up in contrast. A tartan for a funeral doesn't have to be black, the rest of your attire could show the respect. Thinking along those lines the Black Stewart could fit.

I agree. For both of grandparents funerals, I wore my dress Gordon kilt, but had on black shoes, hose, tie, jacket, and waistcoat. I had to wear the Gordon tartan. It was their tartan, and wearing a black kilt instead would've been inappropriate.

And yeah, I think black Stewart would be the best. I've always thought it an amazingly beautiful tartan, plus it's your tartan, plus you can wear it anywhere!

If you are open to non-Clan tartans that might work very nicely for both funerals and also classy formal events you might consider the Black Shadow/Shadow Black tartan (all black but with different thread appearences so that it has a very subtle pattern in certain light) or the Black Isle (a nice basically black tartan with some subtle grey tones). I have a nice new Black Isle myself which is absolutely gorgeous but very classy looking (although it is a magnet for lint).

I like this one best, and think that it would look ok for a funeral, or dressed up at a more joyous occasion also. Definately has the classy look to me.

I wear the Black Stewart. It works just fine for a funeral and it is better for wearing to other events than the black and white Stewart variations. For a funeral I usually wear a grey Argyle, white shirt and a long black tie.

I prefer the first one, but there could be something to be said for wearing your normal colored kilt as well, not a lack of mourning, but a rejoicing in life.

I AGREE I WOULD RATHER HAVE BRIGHT COLORS CELEBRATING MY LIFE RATHER THAN DULL COLORS AT MY FUNERAL. THAT BEING SAID AND MY BEING A STEWART I LIKE THE MOURNING #1 AND WOULD BE HAPPY WEARING IT FOR OTHER THAN JUST FUNERALS. I AM ALSO HAPPY WITH MY BLACK STEWART AND WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEMS WEARING IT EITHER.

The first three are nice choices. You could also consider the Highland Granite tartan.
