Perhaps you could look into really simple sporrans.

My experience....I had an inexpensive three-tassel sporran that I bought off of ebay. The first week those tassels about drove me crazy...bonk, bonk on the sporran as I walked. I finally got used to it, but I never was totally comfortable with the tassels. About a year later one of the tassels fell off, leaving just the string. Well, that looked dumb, and I noticed that the sporrans flap covered where the tassels were attached, so I just cut the three strings off. Voila...utterly simple, plain black sporran.

    I like it.

Here's the functional equivalent....couple of links on ebay:

A little bit fancier, but still...no tassels. Simple.

Look into the Buzz Kidder sporrans like this one.

I have the Country sporran in brown and I like it though I wish the little medallion were bronze or brass instead of pewter. But aside from that, it's great. If you like that you cold contact Buzz and ask to get one special with no ornamentation AT ALL...the ultimate in simplicity.

And the other option? Buy a Freedom kilt and order it with a mess of pockets. Ditto for a Utilikilt.

with My x-kilt I use a black, ten-dollar Jansport bum bag/fanny pack, slung on the frontside. It's cheap, everybody knows what it is, and it works great.

Well, Logan, I viewed the site and it was great to have different sporrans to compare...I was immediately attracted to the horse-hair sporrans for police and fire...Although they are loud, they seem less pouchy (round)...Perhaps that's it??? I like sharp edges???

    My dear Trefor,

It is a very rare pyschological phenomena und seldom seen in Wales. Normally it is ze result of trauma as a child. Ven a young kiltling is attacked by a vild sporran it can leave permanent pyschological scarring that affects ze kilties later in life. Zis often happens in areas of Scotland that are scarely populated und the vild sporrans hide in ze shubberies. In Wales ze ysgrepan or sgrepan as they are known there are completely domesticated.

Luckily, zis condition is completely treatable with lots of ze very expensive therapy..."

    Cheers

a-ha! I wondered if the pouchy look was getting to you a little. The nightstalker has clean lines, I believe. Modern.

I can totally see it. I mean, they do have their place and there are some very nice sporrans that have the pouchy look, but I can see how that wouldn't appeal to some tastes.

So yeah, definitely look into some of the sharper-edged casual/semi-dress sporrans then? As I said, start keeping a little list of the looks you like. Who knows, maybe you could get someone to make one specifically for you.

(those horsehair sporrans ARE divine, aren't they?)

Be forewarned that many of the horse-hair sporrans have little to no room in them to actually use, as is also true of many dress sporrans. If you want one that you can actually put things in, the rounded shape is hard to beat.

I am sure you have mentioned this before, but my mind is full of sinus cold this week, but have you tried a Freedom Kilt or something similar where a sporran is not needed.

I am a fan of sporrans and always have one on with a kilt.

Not a big fan of utility kilts either...Sorry for being so picky...I did see one sporran on XMTS that I really liked...It was custom made by the owner and he also used it as his avatar...I remember, because I commented on it and was given the link, but I never saved it to my favorites.

    Alan,

Thanks for the post...I checked out the Buzz Kidder site at:

http://www.buzzkidder.com/page/page/512029.htm and I'm partial to the Country Sporran...Looks simple, non-intrusive (perhaps smaller) and definitely priced right.

Actually, the Country Sporran is pretty big. It's significantly bigger than my black "now-tasselless" cheapie from ebay. But it IS simple.

Grumpy old cantankerous Steve the Wizard up there at Freedom Kilts will turn out a really nice tartan Freedom kilt for you.......with pockets. Now, they cost what a custom kilt costs, but I've seen two of them and they sure are nice.

There's also the "Hillwalker" kilt from Scotland, though the maker slips my mind right now. They also come with pockets. If you have pockets, y'all don't need a sporran.

Of you could take a deep breath, and make your own kilt...........with pockets.
