With pockets (whether on a kilt or trousers) I can put the different items into different pockets so I know where they are.
I do understand about having the wrong hand free though.
What about in the car? When you're sitting in your car (or anywhere else, for that matter) a sporran is just easier to get into. In a car, with your seatbelt on, it can be tricky to get something from the bottom of your pocket.
