Bow Tie for the 2008 Signal Ball?
OK, what size Bow Tie? I cannot find my 22-year-old very slim black Bow Tie , so now I must purchase a new one for the 2008 Signal Ball. I really, like the slim bow ties, but was curious what the rabble thought was the correct width for the PC jacket. The bow tie will be all black of course, but then again it is the Signal Ball, and my flashes are ancient red, which are Orange, which is the color of Signal.
Chrome Orange

Slim Line/Standard
The Slim Line (SL) is 2 1/2 inches high in classic butterfly shape. This bow tie width is preferred by a majority of our customers.

Very Slim Line
A straight cut, 1 1/2 inch Very Slim Line (VSL) - also referred to as "batwing" - works best with small patterns and solid colors.

I wear bow ties frequently and typically wear the standard size. I would also say that the size can vary based on the collar style of your tux shirt. A wing collar could use a slightly smaller tie, while a pointed collar would be better suited for the standard tie or even a four-in-hand tie. Beauties in Vermont offers the three sizes you mentioned. Jos. A. Bank is another option for them The have self and pre-tied bow ties. Good luck!

The size of the tie has nothing to do with the collar (other than making sure that the width of the back of the tie won't ride over the band of the collar if wearing a wing collar). Rather, the size of the tie is dependent on two things: 1) fashion and 2) your face. If you are very jowly avoid a thin tie, it will accentuate your jowls. If you have a long, thin face avoid a very thin tie as it will make you look like Ichabod Crane. Looking at your photos, either the 1 1/2 inch tie or the 2 1/2 inch tie will work, although I would suggest going with the 2 1/2 tie as it will work better with the formal look of your jacket. Save the 1 1/2 inch ties for day wear.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my pictures and suggesting the appropriate size bow tie.

For me, I would forget the black tie and go with the chrome orange in the regular/slim line. Beauties are great.

Except for the fact that this is a military ball, and ROGERSON785 will be wearing medals, maybe it would be better to avoid the "Carnival Cruise" look...

You are correct, if I was not wearing my 20+ years worth of medals, then the orange bow tie would be appropriate, but wearing the orange bow tie seems like it would distract from the seriousness of the whole affair, besides, the medals have so much color I see no reason to add more flair to the ball. One thing for sure though, I can guarantee, and would be willing to bet a bottle of 18 year old whiskey that I will be the only kilted NCO there,

I'm not a bow tie wearer. I've only ever worn one and that was at my wedding, so they seem to bring bad luck for me. Would the thicker tie have a tendancy to stay above collar rather than have that dreaded half above and other half below collar look?

Then I shall bet that be the finest looking NCO* in attendance.
And if no officers are in kilt either then you'd be a shoe-in for the best-dressed award.

black.
Period.
Seriously.
and if i may, no pre-tied bow ties. (would you wear velcro-secured Ghillies?)
It take maybe 15 mintes to ealrn to tie a proper bow-tie....and it looks FAR better. (and chicks totally dig it; They DO notice.) ((wives too))

Amen. Once I got old enough to care about such things, I learned to tie a bow tie and made sure I only bought "real" ones. It's so much better. And the slight imprefection that shows you tied it yourself is just part of the look.
